Support Local

At first glance, buying locally can seem rather expensive. Shopping at Grocery stores, buying your gas, eating out, renting services such as home repair, car repair, etc.... Usually these things cost a little bit more than going elsewhere, but I would encourage you to buy/shop locally. Here's my reasoning. 1. You save on gas, in fact, if you walk to places, you don't even use gas and you get a bit of exercise. Not a huge thing, but every penny counts, right. 2. It keeps local businesses in business. If you're putting your money there, they aren't forced to shut down or move elsewhere to stay in business. It also shows their perspective owners (of big corporations such as Kroger) that they are needed there and can continue to make money there. 3. Many times, you run into people you know, it's like your hanging out with your friends, and it's always nice to run into your friends (unless you didn't comb your hair or something) and have a short conversation. I mean, have you heard of facebook, it's kind of like that, but actually happening in real time. 4. Time saving, if you do everything locally, you're closer to it, so it doesn't take as much time as it would to do it 15 or 20 minutes away, or it doesn't make it such a chore. And I think we can all agree, more time, is always nice. So, what are you waiting for. Do stuff, just do stuff locally.

Bored with Board Games?

Try ThoughtHammer.com. I know, what does a board gaming site have to do with deals. Well, if you have ever looked into buying board games, especially the cool ones they don't sell at Target or Walmart, then you understand that they are ridiculously expensive. Well, that's where Thoughthammer steps in. They have the best prices (or close to) any board game seller out there and if you order enough you get free shipping, which is always plus. Community Events Can Be Frugal

So, our local fire station puts on an open house every year. I know, you're probably saying, whoopee, but I actually look forward to this thing. Let me tell you why and you'll understand my frugal mind. 1. The kids love it and are entertained for like 2 hours straight. It's like going to a theme park in your back yard and you don't even have to pay. 2. It breaks up the same old thing of everyday life. This makes everyone feel better. 3. Since it's in our community, we know most of the people there, so it's like hanging out with your friends, plus your kids think you planned the whole thing and invited their friends. 4. Probably the most important thing, to a frugal person like myself, is that you get a free meal, which means not only did you not have to make it, but it's awesome food like pizza, popcorn, cider and donuts. All it cost you was absolutely nothing. Ah, priceless. And oh ya, somewhere in there the kids learn about something I'm sure. So, be on the lookout for free community events, your library should have that stuff posted and I'm guessing most fire stations do stuff like this around fire safety month.

Pick Things Up Once

Quick Tip: When you touch something such as a bill, something you need to put away, something you need to do, etc... Do it then. If you just keep moving things around and setting them elsewhere, you are wasting your time and also leaving the possibility of forgetting it altogether. So, if you pick something up to move it or put it in your to do pile, take care of it then.

Amazon Does It Again

If you have an Amazon.com Rewards Visa Credit Card read on. If you don't have one, you might want to think about getting one. Amazon.com and their Rewards Visa card tends to offer some pretty sweet deals. The current one is as follows: Purchase an Amazon.com gift card(s) in increments of $50 and then, sometime before Thanksgiving, they will send you another gift card that is equal to 5% of how much in gift cards you purchased. So, it's like getting a 5% investment. (A $100 gift card would basically give you $105 when it's all said and done.) While this might not seem that great, a 5% investment is a good investment, so you just have to ask yourself if Amazon.com is where you want to invest your money. Christmas is coming up, so if you were going to purchase something from there, you might as well buy some gift cards and use them on gifts, and netting yourself some extra money along the way. Here is a link to the Amazon.com deal.

August Birthday in October

So, I've talked about Toys R Us and their kid's birthday club before, but I just wanted to recap what we were able to get yesterday when we took our son to celebrate his August birthday. (I realize it's October, but the gift card didn't expire until this week, like I've stated before, drag the excitement out as long as you can.) Anyway, they gave him a balloon, a birthday crown, a shout out over the loudspeaker, he got to play with Thomas trains, picked out a dinosaur toy and got a motorcycle hot wheel. All for the low cost of $1. (Thanks to the birthday gift card they sent us.) He was overjoyed with the whole thing. Ah, to be young again, or just to have Toys R Us send me a gift card, either way would be fine. I thank you once again Toys R Us.

Using Imagination to Make Yourself Feel Better

OK, so whatthefrugal, right. The other night, we had pizza, which for most of us is pretty normal, but let's take it to the extreme, right. First, I had two coupons for a free kids junior pizza from Hungry Howies, but 2 of those wasn't going to be enough to fill us up, so I called Marco's Pizza to order a large special for about 8 bucks. Usually, we don't buy pizza unless it's a crazy deal, and to me, a large for $8 was not a super awesome deal, but to make myself feel better and to make sure we had enough to eat, I came up with this deal in my head: Buy a large pizza for 7.99 and get two small pizzas free. OK, I feel better. See, you don't always have to get a deal to make yourself feel frugal, you can make one up in your head. Ah, the power of the imagination.

Thank You Nagle's Market

So, last night the kids and I were able to have some free ice cream cones, thanks to a local ice cream shop. It's was from our library's summer reading program, but we just went and got it yesterday. Sometimes it pays (or frees) to save treats (such as gift cards for free ice cream). Bringing them up on a rainy day or on a night with nothing to do. I mean why not save them for a bit and let that excitement carry over, especially since you're already excited about getting it when you got it the first time, now you can live that excitement all over again.

Is It Worth It: Walgreens Register Rewards

Yes, again I say yes, but there are a few rules to follow:
1. Only buy the products you need or can use. Buying other things can possibly waste your money and waste your time, which is valuable.
2. Walgreens only allows 1 manufacturer coupon per item and if you are using a Register Reward, that counts as one.
3. Combine Register Reward items with coupons when possible. Coupon Crazy Chris is a website that will help you do exactly that.
4. Make sure to use your Register Reward before it expires. Mark the expiration date on a calendar that you will look at.
5. Don't spend your register rewards on useless things. If you have too many register rewards, you can "trick" Walgreens buy purchasing a gift card with those Register Rewards when you use them in combination with another product.

Since we're on the Topic of Qdoba

If you're looking for a cheap meal or on a cheap date, Qdoba (similar restaurants include Panara Bread and Noodles and Company) is a pretty good option. They're quick, they taste good and you don't have to pay a tip, which is awesome and saves you a few dollars. Like other places, Qdoba has a point card  and you get a free meal if you eat there often enough. So, enjoy the fast and relatively inexpensive goodness of Qdoba.

Gamestop Daily Deal

OK, now I realize that not every one of you plays video games, but I'm sure you know somebody who does and I'm sure you also know how expensive they can be. So, here's a tip. Gamestop offers a deal of the day. It ranges from discounts on games, to free shipping, to free stuff. It changes every day and if you're patient, then generally it can work out very well for you. Enjoy and make somebody's day.

The only .net Site I Go To

I'm talking about Slickdeals.net. It's amazing to me how many people know about and utilize this site. Basically, this site is a current listing of active deals on the Internet. It updates multiple times a day and there always seems to be one that catches my eye. But, if you're always looking for deals and thinking about others for things such as birthdays, this site can be a great resource. Just be careful, because part of being frugal means spending wisely, not spending a ton, saving money on great deals.

Borders Bookstore and all its Perks

So Borders, the bookstore, has a few programs available and I just learned about a pretty awesome one today. Basically, they have a rewards card like everyone else and you earn points for spending money at Borders. You have to spend quite a bit though, so it depends if that program is worth it to you. Now, here's the cool program I learned about today. Borders Rewards Perks, this has a few options. One, you get a discount to certain places listed on their site and those offers continually change. They also have limited time offers (self explanatory), VIP in store events, which have different special events going on in their stores, and the last and coolest perk being their Overwhelming Offers. Basically, it's Black Friday (ridiculously good) deals every week day. The catch is that it starts at a certain time and it only lasts until the item is gone, so you have to be prepared and have a quick connection. You can get an e-mail sent daily that tells you what the upcoming deal will be. So, Borders, not only sells great books, they now are putting together great deals for us to enjoy. Get those trigger fingers ready and start clicking.

an Ace in the Hardware

Now, this is a bit of a strange one, but Ace Hardware, yes the hardware store, actually has a pretty good rewards program. If you sign up at their store, they'll give you a handy dandy rewards card (can someone please come up with a better way) and you just scan it every time you make a purchase. The purchases give you points, etc... etc... etc... The thing is you actually get rewarded for having their card. At least every other month they are sending me coupons or 5 bucks off some purchase. Now, here's where it gets good. Ace also has a huge rebate program that's simple to use online. Most of the time the items are free or a buck. You buy those in combination with your rewards card and you are on your way to lots of great free stuff or at least cheaper stuff you need. Just make sure you sign up to receive their ad or look online each week and you'll also agree that ace is a helpful place to save some cash.

Quality and the Amish

Being frugal doesn't mean buying cheap. It means purchasing quality items (or getting them free) that are both useful and that will last. Many products out there are made extremely cheap and will break or be useless after just a few uses. The Amish are known for their quality. Both their food and their furniture are amazing. While you can not use the term inexpensive to refer to the cost of their products. They are a great quality product for what you are paying for. In fact, they will probably outlast or at least look immensely better than any other product you purchase somewhere. Plus, their furniture is made of real wood, which is practically impossible to find anywhere at this point in American culture. So, I recommend that if you want to save some money, purchase from the Amish, you usually can find somewhere within a few hours drive and you'll probably only have to buy one of that particular product in your lifetime.Enjoy.

Buy For Christmas ... in August?

I know, that seems ridiculous right. But, I'm serious. If you start thinking about Christmas, Birthdays, any sort of gift buying day early, you'll almost always save money, plus you'll have it done way beforehand and not have to worry about it. And that my friend is what WhatTheFrugal.com is all about.

Coca Cola Ties The Score

Since we're on the topic of soda, we might as well take a minute to look at Coke's reward program. They call it mycokerewards and have been doing the same program for quite a few years now. Which has worked out very well for my pockets. Basically, on 20 oz bottles, 2-Liters, 12 and 24 oz can packages, etc.. most Coke products have a code. You go to mycokerewards, sign up and put those codes into the system, then after you collect so many points, you can cash them in for free items. I've been able to get multiple gift cards to places like Sony, TGI Fridays, Nike, and Napster. They offer magazines and a ton of other stuff, too. Some of which is good and some of which is crap. So, start collecting points and remember to always collect coca-cola.

One Box Two Box, REDBOX Blue Box

If you haven't heard of Redbox, you're in a for a treat, and if you have, then read on for some helpful tips. Basically, for those of you who don't know what Redbox is, it's a vending machine that lets you rent DVD or blue-ray movies for $1 a night. I know, you're probably saying, "Wow, a buck, that's cheap." Well, WhatTheFrugal.com says, "Not Cheap Enough!". So, here's the deal, there are a few "free" promo codes you can use in combination with your credit card. (They use your credit card as your membership card.) The codes are: DVDATWAG, DVDONME, BREAKROOM, DVDKROG and REDBOX. You can also sign up for codes via text on your phone and search for other codes online. Anyways, these codes work only once per card. They basically give you one free rental. Awesome, Right. Well, it gets better. You can use these codes on any credit card and you can use as many different credit cards as you want. Redbox also recognizes Visa prepaid cards as acceptable cards, so you can use those in combination with these codes too. With all those different cards and codes, it should take you a while before you have to actually pay $1 for a movie rental. So, just sit back, relax and enjoy your free movie and feel free to send me some popcorn for all that cash I just saved you.

Pepsi Hits A Homerun

In the past I've received "free" stuff from returning bottle caps, entering codes from bottle caps, etc... and the "free" items have always had a big logo plastered on them, which makes them nice house wear, but not something you'd wear out in public. Well, recently PEPSI did a promotion on collecting and matching certain bottle caps and returning them for a MLB (Major League Baseball) hat of your choice. I figured that I'd receive a hat that had a MLB team symbol (not the one I'd choose) on it and also would have a big PEPSI label plastered on the side, but instead I got a fairly decent hat with the team I chose and no PEPSI logo whatsoever. Great job PEPSI, I know no one will know that I'm wearing a hat from you, but I do and now, the people reading do also. Keep up the great job not promoting yourself.

Who Ya Gonna call ... Feit Electric

Yes, Feit Electric. While they might not have anything to do with ghosts, they definitely know how to make a consumer's day. I recently purchased this package of light bulbs which says they'll last for around 4000 hours and also won't corrode. Well, it only lasted for about 1000 hours and then corroded. So, I promptly gave them a call and let them know what happened. They then sent me a free package of light bulbs. Very nice customer service. Great job Feit Electric.

Big Boy Knows Free Stuff

Many places, including Big Boy Restaurants, offer free kids meals. The biggest thing is to just ask what the stipulations are. This morning I was able to make my daughters day by taking her to her favorite place to eat. She loves Big Boy's breakfast bar because she can eat whatever and however much she wants. I love it because if you purchase an adult breakfast bar, you get a kid's (5 and under) breakfast bar free. Not only saving money, but making a little kid's day. Awesome. Thank you Big Boy. Thank you.

So, Arby's and the Detroit Tigers have teamed up to offer one awesome deal. If the Tigers manage to hit 3 home runs in a game, then for 24 hours after that game you are able to get a free small curly fries from Arby's. All you need to do is go here and then click on the day they hit the home runs. Print the box score and bring it into Arby's. The fries are amazing and the fact that there is always a chance at getting them free is pretty sweet. Here's hoping the Tigers get some major hitters.

Sobe Happy And Get Them Free

So, Sobe is doing a promotion on their website that allows you to play an instant win game. You can win all sorts of things, but you always at least win a buy 1 get 1 free coupon. While in itself, that could be a great deal. I like to get a better than great deal, so if you take that coupon in this week to your local Kroger, pick up 2 Sobes, you will get them both absolutely free. Yup, free. So, not to shabby of a deal, plus you can play the game once daily, so feel free to get your Sobe on.

Return of the Staples Dollar Menu

This week at Staples, one of the offerings is a $1 dollar 2GB USB Flash Drive. Not too shabby I say, but beware the fine print. Apparently you need to have a Staples Reward card in order for you to actually get the price that is advertised. So, if you think you are going to do an online rebate, like every other staples free or cheap item on the page, you'd be mistaken. So, sign up for a Staples Reward card, pick up the Flash Drive and then they'll send you a check of some sort in the mail. Bring on the waiting.

A Michigan Scanner Darkly

In Michigan, we have a law that is referred to as the UPC Scanning Law. It's actually quite interesting and it definitely works in our bargain hunting favors. Basically, it comes down to this. If you buy an item and it's price tag says one thing, yet they charge you more than that marked price, you can get a small reward. Here's the catch. If you realize that they charged you more while you are at the cash register, they can price fix it right there and charge you the correct amount, there by not paying you the reward. You still get the item at the price listed on it's label, which is still saving money. Awesome. But, if you don't "catch" it until after you've paid and left the line, then you can take it to the service desk and they will fix the items price and are also supposed to give you an "I'm sorry" reward for charging you incorrectly. There are a few items that don't require this reward, but not many. While I won't go into the details of how much you get, basically they can give you between 1 and 5 dollars per specific item. More recently though I've realized that stores tend not to pay this reward. I'm not sure whether they just don't know about it or if they just figure you don't. So, now I've at least given you the ammunition if you want to pursue using this law, just be careful, if you utilize this law too much, the stores just might start pricing things correctly.

Think Outside the Bun, Use Coupons

So, Taco Bell like every other fast food chain out there has an e-mail club, and occasionally they'll send you useful coupons. Well, they recently sent me a coupon to try their Frutista Freeze for free if I purchased anything on their menu. So, I gladly purchased a cheesy double beef burrito for myself and got a Strawberry Frutista for my wife. There by satisfying my hunger pains and scoring brownie points all in one fall swoop. I knew fast food couldn't be all that bad for you.

Say Hello To My Little Friend ... Clearance

Ah, the joy of Red Tags. Wait, you're not familiar with them. Well, let me introduce you. Clearance, this is Bargain Hunter. Bargain Hunter, this is your dream come true. Most stores have a clearance section, the key is to find it. In that section, many times it's located on the ends of isles or somewhere in the back of the store, you have a chance of finding an awesome treasure. But, buyer beware, clearance can also mean crap, so always ask yourself if you need it or if it's really a deal. With clearance, sometimes it pays to come back later, many times it will get marked down again. If it's something you're not really sure about, you can always buy it and return it later (just make sure you can before you purchase it) and save your receipt. So, look for clearance items, they're a great way to get great things really cheap.

A Few Good Men at a Staff Meeting

Yes, you can even get free stuff at a staff meeting. I'm not talking about knowledge either. What I'm talking about is food, yes food. Stop and think about it. On occasion, there is food there. I know that most times we can't look past the fact that we have a meeting to go to. But, I say, change your perspective. Repeat after me, "FREE FOOD", again, "FREE FOOD". There, now stop dreading that ever present staff meeting and look forward, OK, maybe not look forward, but hey, stop dreading them. I mean if they're going to go through the trouble to provide some stale cookies or 25 cent bottled water, or if you're lucky, some day old bagels. By golly, enjoy it and maybe you'll even learn something along the way.

Monday, August 2, 2010

Simple Tip: Check Receipt

Whenever you purchase something, make sure to check your receipt before you leave. Know what you're supposed to be paying for the item and make sure you paid what the product is supposed to be, whether it be the marked price or the sale price. Items are sometimes marked incorrectly, but you are supposed to pay what the price tag says. Items also tend to be on the wrong shelves, so make sure you're grabbing the correct item. Have an ad with you at all times, this will help if you need to question something or show the cashier. You can also check the bar code on the item to the bar code on the shelve to make sure you picked up the correct thing.

Pharmacies - They do more than photos

Buying a new ink cartridge can be extremely expensive. In fact, it can be so expensive, you've probably wondered if you should just buy a new printer, of course then, you'll realize you get a free printer if you purchase a new computer. Now, that 20 dollar ink cartridge is going to cost you almost a grand! Well, that might be a bit extreme, so here's a few options that might help. If you don't mind watching Ebay, you can usually find a pretty good price on ink cartridges, both new and used. Yes, I said used. This is where it gets interesting. Walgreens is able to refill your used ink cartridge for a small fee, even offering coupons at times. There is one more thing that makes the Walgreens deal rather enticing. On occasion, Walgreens will mess up the ink cartridge, this can mean anything. If that happens, they give you back your cartridge for free. Then you can take it home, and most times, it works fine. Sometimes, the color doesn't print correctly, but if you like a bit or artistic interpretation to your printed coupons, you might enjoy the change. Print on.

Sam I Am Part Deux

Local libraries have also thrown themselves into the battle on kids summer playtime. They have been battling it for years now and actually have made amazing progress. Many times they get the kids in by offering toys and free books, sometimes they'll even throw ice cream into the mix. Basically, all you need to do is call or visit your local library and ask at the reference desk. I'm sure they'll be happy to help you out and get your kid(s) involved. Just beware, many times they offer Adult Summer Reading programs, though the prizes don't seem to be as plenty, they do usually offer something.

Summer of Sam I Am

During the summertime, most kids are playing and enjoying their time off of school, and reading books tends to be the farthest thing from their minds. But, local book stores are trying to battle that situation head on. Barnes and Noble and Borders are both offering summer reading programs with incentives. Yes, I said, incentives, I mean, why else would I put it on this blog right. All the kids need to do is read a certain number of books, fill out either of these, here or here, turn the form into the bookstore and boomshakalaka, they receive a free book (from a predetermined list). Borders even let my youngest receive a book even though I just read the required amount of books to him. Though I prefer loving and not fighting, I'm willing to support the battle to get our kids reading. Good luck and God speed.

Return of the Geoffrey

Toys R Us does it again and personally I'm hoping they go for more. What I'm talking about is their birthday club. It's for kids ages 1-10, though I've tried to get in myself in, but to no avail. Basically what it is, it's grandma and grandpa in the form of a department store. You show up on your birthday, or someday close to it, and they act like you own the place. They announce that you're in the store and everybody should pay attention and then give you a balloon that floats for two weeks. What's even better is that they send you a birthday card with money (in the form of a gift card) in it. Kids love that stuff, and Toys R Us, if you're listening, so do we adults.

Saturday, July 24, 2010

Toys R on Us

Another great deal to talk about. I picked this up at ToysRUs for a buck, that's right 1 dolla'. ToysRUs, like many stores, has a member rewards program and they decided to send me 5 bucks, wait for it, FREE. Yup, I was able to capitalize on it and make someone's day. There is a downside to reward programs though, you tend to get e-mails from them, often, but at times, you can turn them into Strawberry Shortcake.

Staples now has a Dollar Menu

So, another great deal, but you better hurry, cause it ends Saturday. Staples is offering this ream of paper for $1. Ya, I know, crazy right. This will last a lot longer than a cheeseburger and it's probably half the calories. Plus, you can submit the rebate online here and can save money on a stamp. Ah, saving money and getting cheap stuff. Ain't life grand.

This morning, WhatTheFrugal.com runs on dunkin

Ah, free stuff. It's pretty much what I live for. Today I'm giving props to Dunkin' Donuts. I joined their Dunkin' Perks and got a free medium dunkaccino. I have to say, it was pretty much awesome and definitely started my day off right. Thank you Dunkin' Donuts. Thank you.

Diagnosis Netbook Murder

So, you think that the AC Adapter for your netbook is broken, but aren't sure. You really don't want to spend money to have someone "look" at it, but you're at a loss as to what to do. Guess what, there's a relatively simple solution. Stores surprisingly want you to buy their stuff. Take your netbook to the store you purchased it from or another dealer that sells netbooks and tell them the issue. Then ask if they might have one on display that you could use to test the adapter with your netbook. If it works, wallah, you're a computer genius and you seriously should get paid for this stuff. Well, let's not go that far, but hey you solved the mystery and you can now purchase an AC Adapter.

1 Receipt = Free Bathtub

Ok, so the moral of this story is easy, SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS. I know, it's easy to throw them out, in fact it feels good to throw them out at times. But, you have to fight that urge and save them. When you buy something big or expensive, like, say a bathtub, staple the receipt to the instructions. (Ya, save those too.) That way, if you have problems, or need to cash in on that 1, 3 or 5 year warranty, you know where to look and you can hopefully save your hard earned cash for something else, like say, a file cabinet.

Get Paid For Eating Lunch

If you don't mind spending a little time away from being bored or work, you might be interested in trying out research studies, clinical trials, taste testing, or product testing. Now, if you're wondering what I'm talking about, then listen up. There is a great big world out there that wants to pay you for doing things such as tasting food, testing products or testing you. Usually, they don't require much effort, but pay pretty decent. If you can get a friend to go along, you can even pretend it's fun. Although my wife doesn't let me refer to them as dates, yet. Most college campuses, medical facilities or larger cities will have opportunities available, you just need to search the correct term or talk to the right person. Generally, if you search for any of the things I listed, along with your area or college, something will come up. Here are a few examples if you live in the Ann Arbor area: Engage or Arbor Strategy Group. Enjoy your Lunch!

Ninety People Exhausted ... I mean, P90X

OK, so people want to save money and also have a super awesome body, right. What to do? P90X of course, it seems to be all the rage currently, but it's kind of expensive and you're probably not even sure if you'll use it. Well, here are some ideas to not only save you time, but also save you money. First, see if one of your friends has it, of course, you probably know if they're using it, most people aren't. Borrow it. This allows you to try it and also helps your friend not feel like they wasted 3 easy payments of 39.95 plus 19.95 s/h. Another thing you can do is visit you're local library. If they don't have it, most libraries will actually purchase products for you, crazy I know, but getting them to purchase stuff for you saves you money, a great financial tip. Ah, saving money, doesn't it feel good. OK, say you don't have a library and don't have any friends, guess you'll need to purchase it. Here's how, www.craiglist.com, www.ebay.com or www.amazon.com. Capitalize on people who made the initial investment, but got exhausted instead without exhausing your wallet. Good luck saving money and getting that awesome body.

First Post

I suppose the most important thing I can tell you about saving money is this, CARE. I know, it seems simple right, but for some reason, saving money is one of the most difficult things to do. The first step is simple though, Care. Care about the money you have and care enough to save and spend it wisely.
